The Emperor Augustus, to repay the hospitality received from Lupiae, ancient Lecce, ordered the construction of a theater and an amphitheater in the city. The discovery of this extraordinary amphitheater in the early 1900s allowed to shed more light on the ancient Roman city, called Lupiae. It could accommodate up to 25,000 spectators. As in the other Roman amphitheaters, there were fights with animals, executions and fights between gladiators.
