Tradition has it that St. Peter landed on the cape of Leuca and that he himself consecrated the sanctuary which was destroyed five times by the Turks always but has always kept the same perimeter. After the last destruction in 1720, an attempt was made to give the sanctuary the appearance of a fortified house. Near the sanctuary there is also the Leuca lighthouse, built at the end of the 19th century and one of the highest lighthouses in Italy, it is built at 120m above sea level.
