With the name of "Lungomare degli Eroi", the stretch of cliff in the center of Otranto is identified, which can be reached on foot. Subject to low tide, it takes on the features of a natural swimming pool. On the Lungomare degli Eroi there is the statue dedicated to the Martyrs of Otranto, created by the sculptor Antonio Bortone in 1922, which represents an allegory of the homeland that defends itself from the dangers that come from the sea.
The promenade is named after the heroes of the city, who over the centuries have fought against incursions from the sea. The hardest battle took place in 1480, when the fleet of Sultan Mohammed II managed to storm and conquer the city.
